Indigenous Canadian Women Are Suffering a Murder Epidemic
Last week’s discovery of the body of Loretta Saunders, an Inuit student who disappeared while working on a thesis about missing and murdered Native Canadian women, sparked calls across the country for action. NGOs say violence against Aboriginal women and girls is reaching epidemic levels — and around half of the murder cases remain unsolved.
Saunders was the third young Aboriginal woman killed this year, according to the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC). Five others were found last fall.
On February 13, NWAC delivered a petition to the House of Commons, signed by over 23,000 Canadians in support of the call for a national inquiry.
Next time you want to say “Canada’s such a nice place! Nothing bad happens in Canada!” please give a thought to this.
Please pay attention to this. The more outside pressure we can put on the government to act, the better. For too long they have sat by and as this happened.
When it comes to Aboriginal women’s issues here in Canada, we are in a woefully sorry state. Too many people complain about what Aboriginal people get and not enough take notice of what has been taken away from them. Many of their issues, such as lack of clean water, basic necessities, as well as the ability to be heard and listened to, fall upon deaf ears and little action is ever taken, if any is taken at all. They are effectively silenced by the government and by society. This is even more so for women.
Please take the time to read and spread the word of what is happening here. Please do not stand idly by as this continues to happen and the Canadian government does nothing for the security of all their people.
Me and a friend were discussing the various misinformed racist things we had heard people we know say about first nations people and its things like this that makes my heart break about that even more
There’s a nationwide issue where most non native people think first nations peoples are given special treatment, are whining to get more and are all drunks. Thoughts like that lead to violence against native women, and attitudes like this make them go unresolved and undiscussed. Its so fucked up man.
